What is dry eye?
Dry eye syndrome is a common condition where the eyes do not make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to the surface of the eyes drying out and becoming inflamed. Dry eye happens mostly as part of the natural ageing process but can also be associated with certain general health conditions, smoking, medication and prolonged use of your computer or smartphone.
Symptoms of dry eye
Your eyes can feel irritated, scratchy, dry and uncomfortable. There may be a burning or itchy sensation, or it may feel as if there is something in the eye like grit or an eyelash. You may experience periods of blurred or smeary vision and sometimes the eyes can even water a lot.
Associated eye conditions
If your eyelids are crusty or red, you may also have another condition called Blepharitis. Blepharitis is a condition that affects the eyelids, making them sore and inflamed. If the eyelid glands become blocked, you may have a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction. It is quite common to have a combination of all three conditions.
Management of dry eye
After thoroughly assessing your eyes, we will guide you through the different types of drops and gels that can help your eyes feel more comfortable. In addition, we will discuss further measures like heated eye masks and eyelid hygiene products, which are also very beneficial in the management of dry eye symptoms.
